Im Laufe der Jahre wurden Pierpaolo Picciolis Kollektionen für Valentino größtenteils durch Farbe definiert – durch seinen kühnen, schlagkräftigen, unverblümten Einsatz von Farbe sowie seine Fähigkeit, eine herausragende Nuance zu schaffen, die die Mode für Jahre prägen wird. (Wir spüren immer noch die Nachwirkungen von Pink PP.) Doch er bemüht sich, gegen eine Art Erwartungshaltung anzugehen: Seine Herbstkollektion 2023 für das italienische Modehaus wurde als “Valentino Black Tie” bezeichnet und bestand größtenteils aus Schwarz und Weiß. Der Frühling 2024 setzt diese Bemühungen fort, die Aufmerksamkeit wieder auf die Konstruktion der Kleidungsstücke und Picciolis Verständnis von Silhouette zu lenken, um den Körper zu feiern.
Unter dem Titel “L’Ecole” und präsentiert in der Beaux-Arts de Paris-Schule am linken Ufer hat Valentinos neueste Kollektion das Ziel, die weibliche Form durch eine feministische Perspektive neu zu definieren, indem sie die Macht, Selbstbestimmung und Komfort des Einzelnen in den Mittelpunkt stellt, wie es in den Show-Notizen heißt. (Um dies zu unterstreichen, brachte die Marke FKA Twigs und eine Gruppe von Tänzern mit, die eine körperliche Choreografie aufführten, während die Models auftraten.)
Der Frühling 2024 beginnt mit einer Reihe von weißen Looks, die fast wie eine leere Leinwand wirken und das Publikum auf den Grundstein für etwas Neues vorbereiten. Durch verkürzte Saumlängen und kunstvolle Ausschnitte, die eher an die Kunst erinnern, die man in der Grundschule macht (wo man ein gefaltetes Stück Papier zerschneidet, um ein abstraktes Muster zu erzeugen), als an freizügige Clubkleidung, schlägt Piccioli eine Art kontrollierte Enthüllung vor, bei der der Körper auf eine maßvolle, stilisierte und absichtliche Weise zum Vorschein kommt.
“Mode ist dazu da, den Körper zu kleiden, doch hier tritt sie in ein Verhältnis”, heißt es in den Show-Notizen, “einen wesentlichen Austausch zwischen dem Kleidungsstück und der Frau darin, der darauf abzielt, unsere Wahrnehmung des Nackten zu transformieren.”

Neben den kunstvollen Ausschnitten führt Valentino eine neue Technik namens “altorilievo” oder “hochrelief” ein. Laut der Marke “skulptiert sie den Stoff zu scheinbar nahtlosen dreidimensionalen Formen – barocke Blätter, Früchte, Blumen und Tiere -, die den nackten Körper umrahmen, unseren natürlichen Zustand.” Das Ergebnis ist “mehr entblößt als bekleidet”, auf eine Art und Weise, bei der die Person, die es trägt, “zu einem aktiven Teilnehmer an seinem Design” wird. Piccioli interessiert sich also nicht nur dafür, wie der Kunde mit den Kleidungsstücken interagiert, sondern auch dafür, wie seine Designs mit ihnen interagieren. Dabei stellt er nicht nur die Vorlieben des Kunden in den Mittelpunkt, sondern auch seine Fähigkeit, selbst zu entscheiden, was er trägt.
Eine weitere Schlagzeile der Frühjahrsshow 2024 ist der große Schub für die VLogo Moon Bag. (Sie erhielt sogar ihren eigenen Hashtag für die Veranstaltung.) Der halbmondförmige Stil vereint “Tages-” und “Nacht-“Attribute wie eine geräumige Form und Materialität mit einer Metallkette, die sich wie ein Armband um das Handgelenk wickeln kann. Die Marke betont die letztere Eigenschaft, da sie auf die Idee zurückführt, dass die Person, die die Stücke trägt, ein aktiver Teilnehmer an ihnen ist: Sie “formt sich nach der Form des Körpers”, während der Riemen “Frau und Kleidungsstück” miteinander verbindet, wenn er wie Schmuck gestylt wird, wie es in den Show-Notizen heißt.
Valentinos neueste Kollektion dreht sich ganz um die Person, die die Kleidung trägt. Die Silhouetten sind scharf, aber durchdacht, niemals einschränkend oder unrealistisch. (Oft schaut man sich eine Modenschau an und denkt: Wer würde das tragen? Wohin würden sie es tragen?) Selbst das Schuhwerk stellt die Praktikabilität in den Vordergrund, mit einer großen Investition in flache Schuhe. (Zeit, diese Plateauschuhe wegzuräumen…) Die Stoffe wirken weich und luftig, wie etwas, in das man sich einwickeln möchte. Die Marke bringt es auf den Punkt: Es geht darum, “sich in seiner eigenen Haut wohlzufühlen.”
